#LOWER - final sequence, finally. #ATFU
So yeah…This is it. 16 tracks. I resequenced it, trimmed some fat, got it to where it’s a nice, lean machine that rooooolls the way it’s supposed to. I wrote, produced, performed, recorded, and mixed about 35 songs for this album, man. To get it to a point where it became ‘LOWER’, I had to make some moves, man…moving tracks around, remove some tracks. I wanted to give y’all an ALBUM. I alw
ays try to give y’all an ALBUM; a cohesive, focused collection of songs, not singles and other stuff or filler. AN. ALBUM. ‘LOWER’ is now AN ALBUM. It was AN ALBUM when it had 20 tracks, it’s a BETTER ALBUM with 16 tracks. It’s focused. I had announced a sequence before, probably a little premature with that. Heh. Bangin now tho….gonna be hitting y’all with some more tracks here soon and figuring out a release date. Proud of this one, man. Another fonkay Naptown Slim production, I am The Thin Beige Duke. Cooooold-blooded. ‘LOWER’…soon, man. This is it. #ATFU

#LOWER is being mastered. Really close to done and it BANGS. Picking final sequence now. It’s deep, baby. There’s a lot to choose from; Slim puts in WORK.
If you don’t, I’d rather you not try to relate to me. You can’t. I work for whatever I get and hold my head high knowing that I earned it doing ‘ME’.
We might be talking about ‘work ethic’ soon…

#ATFU. WORK.

This is the set-list from the show @MrKinetik and I played in LaPorte this weekend. As you can see, we had too much music to pick from…and we’re not counting the encore songs that we could throw into the mix.

We actually had to cut even more songs from this set as the show was running behind schedule. The time of the set you’re looking at here is about an hour, all solid material. I told Mr. Kinetik after the show, “Man, think of all the great songs we DIDN’T play!”

He said, “We have too much music that works…that’s a good problem to have.”

Yeah, man!

#NaptownSlim on ‘WORK’.
Slim at the gig, baby…and that takes us to this word.
‘Work’, all types of it.
People who don’t appreciate your work don’t need to be anywhere around you. Your work is a part of your identity. Someone who doesn’t appreciate it doesn’t appreciate you. If you don’t make enough at the gig for someone to qualify hanging with you, be sure to tell that person to kiss your ass.
People know me from my various jobs. Oh yes, they’re all jobs, even this. This very post is part of my work. These posts brought me more work. My profile on your social media sites garnered me some very positive attention. The work I put in to have something to talk about on those sites brought me more work.
I worked at Rockin Billy’s Records for 10 years+. I’ve been in the Radio One building for about the same amount of time. I worked at Northside News for about three years until it closed. Obviously, I have worked on a lotta music, independently, for years.
I have never purported to anyone that I was rich, gonna be, or that that was my goal. Yeah, I like money, but I won’t sell myself out to get it. And I surely wouldn’t sell myself out to get next to someone with it. I work for mine.
I don’t quit jobs because I’m not a quitter. I work every chance I get. I pick up shifts. It doesn’t bother me because I like to earn and I love my jobs.
Some people simply do not wanna work. They wanna be carried. They want someone to provide. It gives them a sense of ‘security’ to know that someone else is handling the load.
They’re not willing to go out and get things for themselves because they honestly feel entitled to everything the world has to offer, regardless of the fact that they have offered the world nothing but a cute face.
They feel like it is someone else’s responsibility to provide for them when they ain’t even willing to work for that relationship.
They wanna chill, then take vacations, have fancy dinners, rock new clothes, buy big houses, then stay home….based off the work you did.
These type of people have no appreciation for work. They look for every opportunity to avoid it. They can’t maintain a working relationship OR a vocation because people don’t have an appreciation for those that show NO desire to work. It’s one thing to wanna chill, it’s another to expect someone to provide that opportunity to you…especially, you ain’t done one part or ANYTHING to make it so you can ‘chill’.
People love to waltz into ‘ready-made’ situations, as if no work went into making your ‘security’ happen. People ready to quit working the first chance they get can’t wait to find a sucker to take care of them. Here’s the rub though…
Once you’ve found your financial salvation and you decide you can chill, what happens when they get sick of your freeloading ass? What will you do if you need to go to work? Do you have that option? Have you burned so many bridges behind you with your laziness and ineptitude that you can’t go back for references? Did you even make an impression on anyone while you were working?
DO YOU EVEN REMEMBER HOW TO WORK?
I do. How could I forget? YOU musta forgot.
I do it every day…on something….and that’s on EVERYTHING. If you ain’t doing it, you can shut entirely up. I have no types of cares for whatever you’re talking about should you slander my work and you ain’t done a damn thing for yourself.
Look at me; self-made, self-propelled…and every chance I get, I bring my people up with me.
That’s that GOOD work and it ain’t got jack to do with what I get paid.
Now get to work on yourself.

#NaptownSlim speaks about ‘COMMUNICATION’.

Greetings and peace to you. Again, Naptown Slim has a word. Let me talk to you about ‘communication’.

You know why you are here, reading this? Cuz Slim communicates, in so many ways, in so many different forums and Slim stays in touch. It’s not about me giving you my truth; it’s about you hearing my truth, coming to an understanding about it, and dealing with it, and perhaps, communicating it to someone else. You may even end up communicating with me…cuz I put my truth out there and people relate to it.

I can communicate with people anywhere in the world because of the love and passion I carry in my tone, my expression, and my words. People across this world that do not hold the same native tongue as I do have communicated appreciation and admiration for my music. They can understand my passion. I communicate it daily.

I have always been one to open the lines of communication. I give a damn about people. If you have been in my life for any amount of time, you know that I don’t fake jacks…and something about me is communicating to a lotta people that don’t even know me. I do not know no five damb thousand people, but this page has been stuck on that number for about two years…and they still come to holler at Slim. My word.

If I was simply some cat with cool hair, there would be no place for me on the radio, now would there? You can’t see me when I am in here talking to you. You don’t care what I look like. You listen because we are passionate about the music and the job of radio. They told me, “Slim, we want you to be SLIM…don’t force it. Do you.” Never have better words been uttered by a boss. They communicated to me that they wanted me for ME.

What was I doing when you first encountered me? What is the first thing you think about when you think of me? I bet 90% of you will say it has something to do with music. My passion and the communication of it is obvious, if I say so myself. It has NEVER been otherwise and I have NEVER told ANYONE it would be.

To be able to effectively communicate, you hafta have a willing listener. I spent years talking to walls, while making the funkiest records and trying to figure out a way to communicate how real life was for me.

I lived in an uncomfortable place where I had to STFU all the time just to keep the peace. Biting your tongue to keep the peace leads to a bloody mouth and war.

Any relationship you have in this life with communication difficulties will not last. This is just a fact. If you got something to say to someone or something you want the world to know about yourself, you better learn how to communicate, cuz ain’t nobody got time to be tryna figure you out.  There’s too many people that know how to speak up and get things done.

You’re looking at one of them and I know you hear me.

Google my name, ‘Rusty Redenbacher’. See what I have done and am doing.

I didn’t exist as ‘Rusty Redenbacher’ until 2006.

Of course, before that I was recognized as ‘Rusty Redenbacher’ in some circles, ‘Choc Soreel’ in others, and just “the guy from Mudkids”

I started the regular TV gig in 2006. I started working on music outside of the Mudkids and going under my own name as a solo artist in 2006. I had the Mudkids page going on the Myspace (Remember that?) and was always about the group, but I built my own page for my own content starting that year, as well. That’s kinda the start of everything online for me.

I didn’t even have a computer until I bought one outta necessity to keep up with the DJ game in 2005…I was ‘DJ Rusty’ before all this, but I started making sure I was booked as ‘Rusty Redenbacher’. Buying that Apple was one of the best moves I made for myself as an promoter, writer, artist, and person who is interested in LOTS of things. It also made it really easy for me to thank people for their support too. None of that happened until 2006….because Rusty Redenbacher didn’t exist. He was on his way though. And NONE of this woulda happened if there weren’t a lotta people that cared about ‘Russell’ and helped him figure out where he belonged. There’s too many of them to name; I could tag damn near every member of my family on this page right now, honestly.

NONE of this woulda happened if there wasn’t a buncha people that let ‘Russell’ know his music spoke to them. They understood what the songs were saying and somehow, the songs felt like ‘Russell’ spoke to and for them. NONE of this woulda happened without a whole buncha people telling their friends about their friend, ‘Russell’. I could really tag a lotta y’all on this page for that one too. Now, Rusty Redenbacher is on ya radio on WTLC playing sweet R&B and soul, going to events and shaking hands with the people who listen and thanking them in person. I’m rocking every Friday and Saturday, doing whatever I need to do and being wherever I need to be to give the people my best. The ‘Kid is producing and mixing his own music in the crib with a laptop, got a double album ready to go, and still releasing music independently. That dude Rusty gotta live-ass online profile that is reaching way more people than the 5000 on this page cuz he hustles so damn hard on Soundcloud, Bandcamp, Youtube, Tumblr, and of course, I got the Twitter machines goin nuts…#SayItLikePaulWall

Dig that; I was ready to give it up and just try to DJ with my computer…that wasn’t my plan, but that was gonna be my hustle. The year before was all drag city, I had no reason to feel like I could advance in radio at that time…it was all bad. I got started late in the game really…but my hustle for independence and want/need for my voice to heard in ‘The Dialogue’ and the ability to create changed all that.

I have something to say and I WILL say it. Whether you hear it or not is on you.

That’s a stark contrast from “Yo, man…I can rap my ass off, we’re dope. I really mean it. Please listen…” which was my only option before 2006. Naw, I taught myself to edit videos, record music, and now I had another forum to talk to the people. I could get produce the word, get it out, and make it fluorish…new game…aside from that, this is my legacy. This is what I will leave the world; there will be no questions about who I am that can’t be answered by reading a blog, listening to a song, or watching a video.

It’s a new day. I think what I’ve done ain’t too bad for a 6 year-old. Google my name….and thank you for making it so I had a reason for you to do it.

Rusty Redenbacher, the artist formerly known as ‘Choc Soreel’, ‘Rock J’, and the nephew/son/cousin/brother known as ‘Russell’.

(P.S. Just walked across the yard to pick up some songs Defame is mastering for me. Saw a cat on the sidewalk who said, “You’re the dude from IMC!” and told me he’s about to start making music. Told me it was a trip to meet me. I told him I was just as excited about meeting him. That’s me, folks. That’s how I’m livin…and regardless of where I go and what I do in this life, that’s how I will always be…..)

OH, did you really come up here and ask me to play three or four songs..? WoW. Well, if you are gonna treat me like a jukebox, you might as well give me the five bucks you would stick in a jukebox to hear the four songs YOU wanna hear, never mind that dance floor that I’ve had pumping for the last two hours. We gotta play YOUR songs…cuz it’s your birthday and all. I get it. Thanks. I thought I was here to entertain these people, but I got it now…it’s all about YOU. #AMansWork #OnTheRadio #OnYourTV

Back on the radio on @WTLC1067 and it makes me feel good…

(segues into Tony! Toné! Toni!…I was born for this.)

I’m getting (re)accustomed to working the microphone and board on the job. I guess the only real way to learn radio is to do it live. Trying to get my phone game up for #Naptown, so what you see are my instructions on how to take phone calls and get them on the air. I have plenty of experience with digital recording and editing, but now, I gotta learn how to use it for this. Once I get used to it, it should come back to me. (I’ve done air-shifts on WTLC and @HOT963 before, but when you’re on the radio you wanna be crisp and sharp. I’m getting there.)

I’m trying to keep the shows as interactive as possible; it’s about the music AND the people that love it. This is what radio has always meant to me and WTLC has a rich legacy of doing great things in the community. I’m so proud to have a chance to really be a part of it. I’ve basically been asked to be “natural” and be “me” on the air. I’m getting used to the idea that I can get a little loose on the radio. I’m trying to keep the people listening involved when I am on the air, so please make use of the Twitter link and WTLC’s website and holler at me. Whenever I’m on the air, I’m checking for y’all there and on my Twitter #aswell.

#ALSO, check out my fly new keycard, got muh name on it and ERRYTHANG. While I’ve been on air at @IMCTV for a while now, when my old keycard stopped working, I didn’t really need a new one cuz whenever I was going into IMC, I was able to enter the studio through the Green Room or walk in with someone else. (There’s always some kinda activity in that spot.) Anyway, I took the pic of my new keycard because they put an exclamation point after my name. That made me giggle, man…made me feel like someone was excited to be getting this card to me, as if to say “Yo, Rusty, YOU ARE IN THE BUILDING AND WE WANT YOU TO ROCK THE RADIO!”…well, that’s what I’m going with cuz it works.

…and Steve ain’t got no exclamation point after his name on his…(I checked)

Blessed, man. Happy to be doing this. I’m so very thankful for the staff and management there that has been nothing but encouraging and supportive too. I’mma get this right and rock this radio thang. I cordially invite all y’all to tune in and kick it with me.

WTLC FM 106.7 ONLINE

#ALSO, Dan ‘The Man’ McNeal and myself are available for appearances and bookings…for a fee. We do a celebrity lookalike show, ‘Marley And McDonald; Memories And Melodies’. We kinda flip it though; I do all the Doobie Brothers’ hits and he does the Bob Marley tunes. It’s badass.

We’re just tryna hustle harder for Indy’s Music Channel, man. Check us out online here…

“You don’t get much…”
That is what I was told today by my supervisor. Let me set the scene though…………
We’ve grouped classrooms into communities this year (my community is a 4th, 5th, 6th classroom and mine) and each community picks colleges. College readiness is a focal point this year in the district (so I’ve been told by the powers that be) and I’m okay with the presence and awareness of higher learning (although I don’t think college is for everybody it’s an option that should be evaluated). We are supposed to try to visit our respective colleges. In my community all we had was Depauw and Indiana State, so me and a couple of my colleagues wanted to add Butler to the list (it’s literally six blocks and a left turn away from the school) for a place to visit because it’s close and great and etc. So after sitting there talking, my supervisor comes in and we pose the idea to her…it gets shot down because another community supposedly has Butler chosen (which turned out to be false after all this drama). She doesn’t want the schools to overlap because she wants to create a diverse experience. Now, I wonder to myself, “Does it really matter if the 2nd graders in Community A have the same school as Community D? Isn’t any exposure the point of all this?” Naturally, I tell her I don’t get why we can’t have the same schools………to which I’m met with a response “You don’t get much.”
Ok. Wait.
Now, I asked her why it mattered if it overlapped because I had already stated that Depauw and Indiana State are both at least 90 minutes away and transportation is expensive and it would be simpler to go somewhere closer and if anything, try to go to only ONE of the other two.
“You don’t get much.” That’s what I got though. To which I stood up and informed her that what she said was rude and I wasn’t going to sit in the meeting any further. Then it really gets bad and I hear about how “You don’t seem to get much of what we do in this building and you’re always asking questions about everything.”
My response was simple. I’m a grown man and I can ask questions whenever I get ready to and it’s not about challenging things it about UNDERSTANDING what’s going on. People that don’t ask questions subject themselves to lives of confusion and wandering out of a lack of understanding. I’ve asked questions since I could talk, my parents have always said I always wanted to know the who/what/where/when/why/how of everything. My mother says that I am always trying to find a better way to understand something and she’s right. I just want to know what is going on and I refuse to be in the dark about things that go on where I work especially, but really in all walks of life.
So anyway, after hearing about how clueless I am (basically) I leave the room. I go to my classroom and sit down. One of my students walks in and he has no idea that I’m about ready to break something and simply asks me, “What am I supposed to do now?” I get him started on an assignment called “Four Square” that is a four-pronged way to learn vocabulary (Definition from dictionary, synonyms, used in a sentence, draw a picture). I just breathe (coping skill for me because I have been known to have what some call manic episodes) and calm down, which takes what seems like an eternity.
On my album, Sounds Of Soul, there’s a song called “Coordinates” and I talk in that song about being “misunderstood” for lack of better terms, as I try to navigate through life.
Today was a prime example.
I didn’t mean to be rude by asking my question. I was truly thinking about the best options for my students. I’ve seen most major colleges in Indiana with my own two eyes. I’ve been to Depauw. Been to Indiana State. Graduated from Butler and have been back in classes since January 2011. IU, done that. Purdue, same. IUPUI same. Ball State. Marian University. I’ve been to colleges. It’s not about me at all. But I want my students to get the most effective experience so why not start down the street from our school, so close that we could walk if we wanted to?
I’m tired. I’m tired of being seen as a boat-rocker when really I’m just trying to talk to the captain about where we’re going and why. I love people. I want nothing but the best for everybody, including 400+ students that I am not related to and don’t see anywhere but school.
Now I have a show to do tonight at The Jazz Kitchen in Indianapolis with my buddy Rusty Redenbacher and The Native Sun band. I love y’all. Thanks for reading.
Salutations.

‘Know Your Place, Know Your Forum’ (Fri. 7/15/11)
(I’m pissed. I am pissed. I have a lotta feelings about this dumb stuff and I’m finna unload here because this is MY PERSONAL FORUM TO DO SO. There was a lotta stuff wrong with the way this went down.)
So today, I was informed that one of my co-workers at one of my many jobs, none of which include a coffeehouse currently (but I make a mean espresso.) posted an inflammatory blog about ‘planking’. You wanna talk about ‘slave origins’ and such, that’s cool. Provide me some links detailing how this trend that took off in England in the late ‘90’shas its origins in slavery.
#SeeWhatIDidThere?
But when I am doing promotions, be it for @DampPromo, @OldSoulEnt…or being paid write for @MetroMixindy, or posting music and writing the posts for @TheTornadoAlley (#ATFU)’s Tumblr Page, I am representing the TEAM, the COMPANY, the BUSINESS and trying to push whatever agenda they have forward while remaining true to myself. I have built a reputation behind being true to myself and being very good at whatever it is I’m purporting to do…especially when I am doing it for pay.
If the company is obviously doing a promotion about something, how would it look if I posted something AGAINST said promotion on the company’s website? And maybe the celebrity you are talking about who spoke out against it took the time to look at some of the articles online about this ‘planking’ trend and reconsidered his position? Everyone is not ‘selling out’. Some things are just to be ‘reconsidered and reapproached’.
There’s a lotta things that pissed me off about this post; it’s treasonous, for one. I’m not finna tell Kurt or Doug how cool they are to their face and lump them in with the chumps in the next sentence. And I certainly wouldn’t do it while I was in the middle of a campaign for them.
Use YOUR personal forums to make YOUR personal statements, not work forums, unless you are paid to do op-ed pieces. Even then, you’re still repping the TEAM…and I am on a LOTTA TEAMS…doing good things for a LOTTA PEOPLE. I do not like to be belittled or lumped in with everybody else because I am NOT like everyone else and that’s why people like me. I do me, even when I am working for YOU and I know where to place my thoughts and words.
It would be VERY easy for me to put people on blast. I use my forums for different things…and all of them stay active. I am ‘broadcasting online’ to an audience of 10,000+ daily… I am fluent AF in #Hashtag. I know how to brand something and make it stick, which is why branding the people mentioned in the post was such a bad move. #WrongForumDude, take that shit to YOUR Twitter ( <—- the #evl in me, would put a link there, but this is about education.) where you can broadcast your personal thoughts. Some streams cross, some don’t.
Take ‘The #BASEDRUSTY’ - I don’t post that stuff on my Facebook page, because I use my Facebook page and the statuses on it to show my true side and what I am feeling and thinking about as a man, artist, and writer. While The #BASEDRUSTY is obviously me and my creation, his mouth is VERY RECKLESS and he has no place on that page…yet…he’ll get there, but he’s gonna hafta stop cussin out every children’s TV show but Caillou. So, the people that I know would be into my music, videos, and blogs that are on my ‘Rusty Redenbacher (Musician)’ Facebook page get updates from The #BASEDRUSTY. And obviously, he gets free run on my Tumblr.
OH…THE #BASEDRUSTY WANTS YOU TO TAKE NOTE OF THESE LINKS HE IS PROVIDING TOO! HE WANTS YOU TO HIT THEM AND USE THEM BECAUSE THEY ARE HERE FOR YOUR ENLIGHTENMENT AND EDIFICATION! LEARN!!!
That guy, man… SMH…
Here’s another point; if you wanna tie everything into something bad, you can. If someone brings me a stack of dominoes, am I supposed to think that it represents the way the Nazis lined up Jews to shoot them to save bullets? Should I stop buying hot-dogs because they’re packaged in a way that kinda resembles the way Africans (not ‘slaves’, ‘AFRICANS’) were brought over here in the Middle Passage? (or cuz they’re pig-lips and booty parts…meh) It’s easy to find bad in the roots of anything on earth and the internet is a huge resource for that. It’s also the place where the most MISinformation is spread, so research your researchers.
(Hiya, Willie Lynch letter folks.)
What up, Fox News…? (You don’t get a link either. Do your damage on your own)
I am as offended by the fact that this post was so badly written as I am that there was no base of fact in what was being purported to be true on a HUGE website with a HUGE company with WAY more reach than I have personally…AND I was lumped in with the sell-outs. Wow. Just wow. As if I was too ignorant to check out what was going on with this trend or didn’t have enough sense to be oh, so very serious ALL THE TIME.
I do a LOT for my community, for my friends, and for the entire general perception of what #Naptown is. You better believe that. And when you post some stuff on a company site (in a part of the company that I DON’T EVEN WORK FOR), well, that’s just not a good look. You ain’t taking that kinda time to check on the music I am posting and promoting EVERY DAY but you got time to make sure my name is in the post that is against a promotion the company is doing (which I gave my voice to because I love to work for this company and I’m good…at…everything I do, bub. All of it.)
Now…here’s the unloading…all that up there was for everybody… #Shruglife, each one reach one teach one…here comes ‘ToughLove’
What your life like, man? Leave me outta the dumb shit until you know who I am and what I know about life and especially social-media. I look at my life online as a job because it is. It gets me my bookings (all of which I handle myself, yet again), which is how I eat.
Don’t play with me and take sideways shots because you are reading an EPIC well-written post by a PROUD BLACK MAN who will not stand idly by and be slandered sideways and have inferences made about him by people who work for the people he works for.. 1) because I am a better writer than you. 2) because I have a bigger audience than you personally do, so that shot on the company site was cheap and petty and 3) I can make it rhyme and have a whole team of people ready to get it out there in minutes and 4) I’m relentless and you will never outwork me…ever..and I do what you do because I love it…
Don’t play yourself like that ever again cuz next time, it won’t be a blog that also details how to research facts and provide links. If you don’t believe I’ve made my point, go back and hit the links. And see how I put my #FF for people I work for in this post, look at how I made the whole thing interesting and flow, even though some might see ‘TLDNR’…
(You even noted that you got onto ‘planking’ because of me, look at Rusty informing YOU of internet trends #everydayb! TAKE NOTE. I’ll be! Look at Rusty always being ahead of the curve and up on everything, wow. Look at Rusty go, man!)
…and he left your name outta it.
I’m not pissed no more and I have no more teaching to do today. Back to work.
