Hello again, friends. Rusty here.
Figured it was time to let you in on some of the #BASEDRUSTY’s thinking. I know the guy kinda well, so I thought I’d help you make more sense of some of his stuff. It makes perfect sense when it’s explained to me, so maybe I can shine a little light on his M.O.
the #BASEDRUSTY takes note of trends and the way things are marketed. He understands the idea of being consistent within the same framework. He often draws parallels to things like the music of Wesley Willis and the screen-printing technique of Andy Warhol because these are very influential to him.
Wesley Willis was known for his way of using the exact same music all throughout the course of an album, often changing only the lyric and the sound effects used on the bridge. That’s it. It would be the exact same preset little rhythm in the keyboard they had at the studio and Wesley would rock some new lyrics on it for every song. Brilliant. No producer fees. You know exactly what you’re getting and you know what will be changed. By staying within the same framework for every song, you as a listener either fall in love with the tune or hate it, but by the fourth song…it’s in your head…
(it’s what the #BASEDRUSTY refers to as ‘Audio Hashtagging’)
Andy Warhol would often silk-screen the same image over and over again, painting it different colors, maybe screening it slightly differently, but it was the same image…over and over again. Who woulda thought that a painting of a Campbell’s soup can would be hanging on the wall of a fine-art gallery? Now who woulda thought that the artist would paint this same image hundreds of times…? And who woulda thought that same artist would come up with another way to do this with images MUCH quicker and easier, to a point where he was actually hiring OTHER people to make the ‘paintings’ and he began simply overseeing the process and signing the work…?
(Kinda sounds like ‘ghostwriting’ and ‘ghost production’ huh?)
the #BASEDRUSTY has taken that idea and applied it to music. There’s parallels all throughout popular music that are like this. As soon as someone comes out with a style and it becomes popular, there will be pale imitations and people that cash in on a trend you created.
the #BASEDRUSTY HIMSELF is on the heels of what Lil B created, but he acknowledges that debt in his very name…and he is true to one or more elements of #BASEDMUSIC in every one of the 25 #LikeCaillou’s that have been posted so far.
(And yo…if Lex Luger can keep selling people the same kinda beats and everyone in Young Money can sound exactly alike, why can’t the #BASEDRUSTY rock this beat as many ways as he can think of? Repetition is the heart of popular music. the #BASEDRUSTY is getting in where he fits in. This is hip-hop and it’s a nation of pirates. It always has been, it’s just blatant now.)
the #BASEDRUSTY knows that social-media is the best, most effective means of promotion. In fact, if there was no social-media, there’d be no #BASEDRUSTY. Everything about him is based on social-media INTERACTION and leaving his mark online.
His name is a #HASHTAG, people. He speaks non-stop #HASHTAG and he repeats certain phrases and words a lot because this is how trends start and are sustained. One person says something fly, more people think it’s fly and repeat it. The originator keeps repeating it and it catches on. There’s many people on Twitter that are excellent ‘hashtaggers’ and recognize that while they’re great as a punchline, they’re also very useful. Hashtags become ‘catch phrases’…’catch phrases’ become t-shirts and bumper-stickers. the #BASEDRUSTY is keenly aware of this and makes sure that the things he wants you to attach him to get mentioned and tagged often; #LikeCaillou, #230COLORS, #SWAG, #ATFU, and of course, his name, because if you really wanna know about him, there’s always a way to find him.
Andy Kaufman is another influential person in the story of the #BASEDRUSTY. Andy was a GENIUS at the ‘put on’…or not. While Andy was doing his thing, there would often be a point in the performance where the audience was either involved in the act or had no idea as to when the ‘act’ was starting and ‘real life’ was ending and vice versa. To this day, there’s pranks he pulled off that people still can’t figure out. He was an absolute genius at blurring the line between ‘persona’ and ‘personality’.
the #BASEDRUSTY is obviously a ‘persona’, but he has plenty of his own personality. It’s kinda important for me to make sure that people understand that it’s a ‘character’ but he has ‘character’. He has his own way of talking, his own stances, his own way of reacting. He is an artist and wants to be respected for what he does, but he’s also trying to make statements, some of which may irk you simply because of the language he uses.
(That in and of itself is a statement…and as the #BASEDRUSTY has pointed out, “IF YOU DON’T LIKE MY EGO, TYPING IN ALL CAPS, AND CALLING YOU ‘BITCHES’ ON EVERY SONG, STOP PRAISING KANYE. I LEARNED IT FROM THE BEST.” He always finds a way to make a point…even while he’s sitting there with his mouth open, staring into the distance. You’ll learn that if you get past the look…)
This next part is key and will definitely help you make sense of some of what the #BASEDRUSTY is trying to do…

ANDY KAUFMAN was a #RARE TALENT and #LEGENDARY performer that treaded a line between ‘performer’, ‘prankster’, and ‘provocateur’ that the #BASEDRUSTY finds very very #INSPIRATIONAL.
