I’m uploading the zip of this right now and will be posting it here tonight. 5 tracks, yo, from concept to posting in approximately 36 hours. Yup. I friggin love making music, man. I’m glad to offer this little instrumental offering to y’all, man. If you dig it, share it with whomever you feel would feel like you do about it. 

I really wanna send a big shout out to Mr. Kinetik who pushed me back into considering making tracks about six months ago. We were in the car and I was playing some ‘tracks’ I had made on a four track utilizing my buddy, Paul Bunyon’s oooold mixer with about 4 seconds of sample time. When he said, “Man, we could rhyme to some of these…”, I was like, “#Maby?…” but the sound quality is so lo-fi, and actually, a lot of it was made specifically to be heard instrumentally.

Due to the limitations of the equipment, I was forced to learn how to count the beats out (something I do naturally, but when it comes to making beats live, chopping loops and stuff, you gotta know where you are or you’re not making a ‘track’, you’re making noise…’on beat’.), trigger samples and parts live, all the way thru, learned a bit about mixing down a tape on a multitrack recorder…this was a while back, man. Basically I was making a ‘pause tape’ on a four-track. 

I use a lotta those same techniques now. I made all the rhythm beds for every track on the ‘The Tinkerer’ live on my turntables. Every rhythm bed is performed on the turntables live, chopping loops, flashing, blending the breaks with a sample…and then the instrumentation was added. In all honesty, the idea of adding instrumentation was totally foreign to me. I don’t have musical equipment and at the time, I didn’t even have a Midi keyboard. Shit done changed and I’m teaching myself more techniques. ‘The Tinkerer’ is Tesla, figuring things out…working on it, and if you ask me, doing not too bad. (I’m really happy with it.)

‘5ive On The Black Hand Side’ is a different in a few ways. 1) I learned how to chop and loop on my computer, so all these were actually composed in Garageband. 2) I got a Midi keyboard now, woo! 3) No rappin, yo…tracks. 

I’m releasing this cuz I love ya and I had a great time making it. Hope you enjoy it. The zip will be posted before midnight, #Naptown time, tonight.

I was driving home from WTLC tonight and listening to ‘The Tinkerer’ yet again..and this song has given me fits. 

I soooo want it to be right. It’s gotta set of verses, man…I really worked hard to craft this joint killer groove and I used a record that I have loved since I was a little boy for it, from one of the first records sent home with me from Dad’s collection in Gary. “Yeah, man…you can take that one.” I was a record hawk from birth, I spoz. And some of the records my Dad let me take home to Indianapolis are albums that I still listen to, to this day. This song gotta be right…. 

I would mix it, think I had it, take it to the car and I just couldn’t hear what I wanted, in contrast to the rest of the album…and this song is so important in the sequence of ‘The Tinkerer’. It got to the point where I had to poke fun at myself. 

It only took me a week to produce the tracks, write, and record the songs. I’ve been listening to ‘The Tinkerer’ to make sure it’s still raw and has the energy that was in my Iron Man Monster Factory that week, but I hafta remember that I can’t mix for my ears only. I hafta make sure you can hear all the parts and everything is funky. I know what I said and where the little bells and whistles come in, but I wanna get this is close to what is in my head and mixed for EVERYBODY’S EARS. 

That’s no small task and this process has given me a lot (more) respect for engineers and sound men. Those cats have a job that’s kinda thankless, which is hella unfair…cuz ain’t nothing happening without the sound man. Nothing. 

Anyway, man…I’m rambling because as I type this, I’m listening to the album again and now it sounds a lot better to me. I was half ready to just post a buncha tunes as soon as I finished (I be getting geeked) but I’m glad I held up on leaking a lotta joints from ‘The Tinkerer’. I posted one or two on this Tumblr…and I did end up deciding to add a song to the album after I released it on here

I want y’all to hear what I hear in my head the best way I can make it happen. ‘The Tinkerer’ and the process of creating it at home on this very laptop has taught me a lot, man. I didn’t even KNOW about a gang of effects and processors and stuff in the program…and I’ve been using Garageband to record vocals for a minute.

(Every cat in @ATFU_ records themselves and we’ve all jumped into other ways to make music, be it making beats, learning to DJ, and every cat is still rapping and singing his ass off. We all bring a ton of game to the table…and we WORK together. I love this shit.)

You know what it is, man… had to show y’all that the music will always get made and I’m always gonna be giving THE MUSIC my best. It’s just what I do…and here I am, just now learning to produce tracks and really mix music for myself. Crazy, man.

Never stop learning. Continue refining your craft. Focus on that craft and work that craft.

This is a direct reflection of my timeline on Twitter regarding MY feelings about how the game has basically changed from where I started. I come from a legacy of putting 350 paying people in a nightclub on a regular basis. And while there are pockets where people are packing clubs every now and then, there isn’t really a stable base for the ‘live musician’ in a lotta towns anymore.

The fact of the matter is, I no longer see the need to come outta my house and rock shows where I live anymore if I can’t expect to make a certain amount of money for my time, promotional effort, prestige where I live, and the various media platforms I maintain and control to keep all these things I just named #relevant. (WHAT IT DO, @FEERAY #ATFU!) so basically, I have made a decision to back away from the stages of Indianapolis and go focus on these other platforms…all the entities that I work for do not hold the same views as myself and they don’t claim to, nor are they responsible for any words or thoughts expressed that you may not want your kids’ tender ears to hear. It does include words that I can’t ever say on the radio, but not all 24.

I produced this track last night, finished it up tonight, and the spirit moved me to write a song. That’s how it works for me…

Listen, man. I love to make music. I always will, but I’ve accepted some realities in the last year or so. The game has changed so very much where I live. I love #Naptown, but I can’t really depend on hometown to keep my operation afloat like I used to.

I’ve ALWAYS had day jobs and kept some money in my pocket, so I’ve never relied on the music to make sure I could eat…but I usually made a nice penny. Now, in the last few years, I’ve seen the live music scene in #Naptown dissipate….literally vaporize. I guess there are spots that are doing all they can to give artists a forum. I play these clubs and I always have a wonderful experience. But, with my pedigree, history, and shit…even my social-media touch, I’m bringing a lotta shit to the table. Every single cat in #ATFU is bringing the funk, the thunder like I am…

…I say that to say this; there’s no way I need to be rocking in my city for gas money, bruh. Not on a Saturday night, when I could be working on the radio, or making new music to further spread the legend of @ATFU_ online to a NATIONAL..ahem…WORLDWIDE audience. And really, what bigger forums do I need to have other than local radio AND television to be able to say, ‘Uh, yeah…this is my fee.’ Flat out. Have it when I get there or don’t approach me and don’t ask me to approach and of my SIX GROWN-ASS BROTHERS that I roll with who #ALSO happen to be amongst the BEST at what they do around here with that young shit.

Game changed, man.

Now, my passion will not be pimped in support of the scene, because well, I am a professional…at ALL kinds of stuff…as you can clearly see and hear from this very post. It. Is. What. I. Do.

…but I don’t hafta promote your show, get all my homeboys and all the people that support us to promote it #aswell, come to your show, hold that shit down, and post video and blogs about it, furthering YOUR profile right along with ours…without expecting SOMETHING for my effort…at this point in my life and career, that should make sense to anybody.

So, I just won’t do it. 

…and I rock…like a muthafucka. Go check #ATFUTube and watch any of the live clips. Aside from all the above stuff I said, yeah, man…I fuckin rock. Bruh, we kickstarted the movement with all those great free albums so when we kept it rollin, the shows would generate something…anything…everybody coming at me needs to know this now, DON’T…unless you have a budget. I NEVER expected to get rich from making music, but at this point y’all…if I can’t name my price and get it, I ain’t playing. It’s that simple.

I’m having to learn how to declare my worth, folks. This is a personal journey that I will let you in on as time sees fit and the spirit moves me.

I think this song should speak to a lotta independent artists who feel the pressure of trying to use where you live as a springboard, but meet with resistance. Don’t get it wrong, I love #Naptown music of ALL KINDS, I will be coming to shows and shooting footage like I always do whenever I get the chance. I’m always sure to make sure to mention the local artists that get played on IMC because these artists work HARD to get a name…just as I have. Well, man… I gotta name, that’s one thing I do know, I gotta name cuz I stop and sign it on your kids’ t-shirts when I’m at the grocery-store, I hear it screamed at me when I’m on the sidewalk and I say it every night on television. (#Snark, love it, deal with it)

I just can do so much more as a supporter from the outside who just happens to make music…but ain’t finna jump on that stage without someone knowing damn well what they are getting when I do so and paying me and my team for that. 

That’s about all I need to say. Now there’s a written record of why I feel like this.

..and I made the beat and then I made it rhyme.

This. Is. What. I. Do. and I will not let this talent, will, and passion be pimped for anything by anybody. Listen to the song. It explains my stance very clearly. 

Staying home, finishing this in 24 hours myself, while teaching myself new techniques of editing and mixing, writing a song that is as real as anything I’ve ever written and posting it online for the world to download for free, absorb, and push the name and rep of my squad mission nationally, so I can #MABY generate real income later  »»»»»»»»> coming to a club and playing it for you for peanuts. 

I’m getting more outta staying home and creating music than I am going out and playing it…spiritually. #ASWELL  

And THAT is more of a reason to stay in the crib and hustle for the squad at Mission Control.

This is a track from the album, man. 

I’ve been listening to it a lot since it’s been finished and there’s a couple of places where I feel like my vocals could be more present in the mix. I had a helluva time getting ‘Frah Ken Steen’ to sound like I wanted it to and it set the hallmark for ‘most mix downs’ (eight). I finally got it where I want it, I don’t know if it’s ‘right’, but it’s where I want it and I think you can hear everything the way I hear it in my head.

This is another one of the songs where I felt like I needed to boost the vocals and give them a little more ‘oomph’ …and I figured seeing as how it is 2 a.m. (Just had a great show at The Jazz Kitchen with The Native Sun and of course, Mr. Kinetik.  Footage coming soon, man. I got a gang of the show thanks to my man, Sir Doug.) 

I just thought since it was 2 a.m. (listen to the chorus), and like I said before, the only way for me to make sure I’m not just mixing down for my ears is to bounce it off y’all, man. So here’s what I hope is the final mix of ‘The Nocturnal Stomp’ before I send it back to be mastered.
