To all my fellow artists, my peers, my friends, and people I admire,
I’m sitting here, live from #Naptown, looking at all the music I have created in the last couple months and really trippin…
As an artist, you will see far more obstacles than opportunities. Things will be placed in your way to stop you on purpose. Some people you think are in your corner will not stand by you when the going gets rough. People you love will tell you to quit, without understanding that you are speaking from your soul when you do whatever kinda art it is you do.
Don’t.
This is JUST LIFE for those who are truly ‘ARTISTS’ and using their life’s story to say something and leave SOME kinda legacy behind you when you pass. Yes, I suppose I am in the ‘music business’, but the business of music isn’t what made me write songs. We ain’t talking about the music business right now, we’re talking about ‘art’ and the motivation behind it.
I have something to say.
If you really believe you have something to say, whether you are saying it on canvases with paints, by scratching records back and forth, or by acting on a stage or screen, giving breath and life to someone’s words…don’t you EVER let anyone take your passion from you.
LIVE YOUR LIFE, PUT IT IN YOUR ART.
SOMEONE IS LISTENING…SOMEONE IS WATCHING. IT WILL AFFECT THEM IF YOUR HEART AND SOUL ARE IN IT.
Every part of your life can be used for inspiration, even the bad things. Use ‘em. I’ve had to get very real with life over the last few years. I’ve learned hard, hard, HARD lessons and the thing that kept me sane was being able to put it into art, to bleed it out, to use it to continue living MY LIFE, the real life that I’ve committed myself to living and talking about in my music. I can always get back to ‘me’ through music. It’s a blessing.
Just keep doing the things that you are passionate about, my fellow artists and anyone aspiring to be…Good luck with it all and may your Higher Power help you power through the hard times.

Went to my favorite game store today to get ‘Madden ‘12’ so I could exact some revenge on the dastardly Houston Texans for thrashing my Colts in the season-opener, They were closing at 6. It was 6:04 p.m….damb.
Oh well, the club is right over there though and they ALWAYS got sumn new that I want… WE GOIN TO WALLAHWORL!
I went into the club and of course, they had the game I wanted. Walked to the counter and one of the cats who worked there asked me about how to get his video on IMC-TV. Gave the brother all the advice and info I had, dapped him up and paid for my game. Peace to my man, Ben Real. It WAS real, my dude. Good to meet you.
On my way out, I spied a basket full five-dollar DVD’s. I can’t walk by one of these without rummaging through it. I talked to the lady that was across from me, found a couple of good ones, suggested a movie for her and was about to push to my second visit to the checkout line.
A young man came up to me and asked if I was Rusty Redenbacher. I am, so I said, “Yeah, man. How ya doin?” and shook his hand. He told me he watches the show, read my column in Metromix, checked me out online and all that. Solid! We talked about music, of course (that’s what I do). Young brutha let me know he was starting to write songs. *daps* I told him to record as much as possible, record record record and listen to yourself. He said he had no studio. “I have no studio, bruh. I just recorded an album at home for 29 bucks. You can do it. Just get your voice on something and start listening.”
One of the workers came over with a piece of paper and a pen. Young brutha asked for my autograph. I signed it, wrote down the #ATFU blog address and of course, thanked him for the support. Then we took a coupla flicks, two on his phone, two on mine. Believe me, I like meeting these people as much as they like meeting me.
At this point, some clown ran up on me with his cart…HEY, THAT’S NOT “SOME CLOWN”! THAT’S TONY!!
Tony used to own the record-store that made me a ‘record-store guy’; he was selling used cassettes and records way before it was commonplace and the joint was called ‘Second Time Around’. I remember we would drive by it when we’d drive through Broad Ripple and I ALWAYS wanted to stop. By the time I was old enough to go in there and kick it, my mind was ready, my ears were ready, and I was turned on to some of the music and bands that have influenced everything I have done to this day.
Tony used to run me outta the place when I would try to cut school too, man. “Hey, Russ, what’s happeni…HEY, YOU’RE SUPPOSED TO BE IN SCHOOL. Get outta here until 3:30. I MEAN IT.” So, Tony and the gang at STA not only turned me onto what would eventually be called ‘Alternative music’, but they made sure my wild ass stayed in the books. Well, they made sure I didn’t try to clown at THEIR spot, that’s for sure. #Also, when I needed a few bucks, Tony would buy my records back…even the crappy ones and always paid me fair.
Man, I loved that place. I met some friends there that have changed the cultural landscape of Indianapolis…and more importantly, they’re my friends. Vess, Tom, Jim, Maria, Duncan, Will, Andy, Bill, Brad, Chris, shit…even Todd (he pissed me the entire f*ck off the last time I saw him, but I’m off it. That’s just his way. Meh.) All these people were turning me on to a world of music I didn’t know existed… I bought my first R.E.M, The Smiths, The Cure, Depeche Mode, The Replacements, Black Flag, Bad Brains, The Meters, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins and The Cult (before they got all metal) albums there. The musical education I got in that store is treasured to me.
People can change your life without trying, so think of what you can do when you try…?

This is my first self-produced project. I had no idea I was gonna create this album and I have no idea as to when it will come out, but it will…likely as a ‘name your price’ joint, just as @MrKinetik did ‘Sounds Of Soul’

Hello again, friends. Rusty here.
Figured it was time to let you in on some of the #BASEDRUSTY’s thinking. I know the guy kinda well, so I thought I’d help you make more sense of some of his stuff. It makes perfect sense when it’s explained to me, so maybe I can shine a little light on his M.O.
the #BASEDRUSTY takes note of trends and the way things are marketed. He understands the idea of being consistent within the same framework. He often draws parallels to things like the music of Wesley Willis and the screen-printing technique of Andy Warhol because these are very influential to him.
Wesley Willis was known for his way of using the exact same music all throughout the course of an album, often changing only the lyric and the sound effects used on the bridge. That’s it. It would be the exact same preset little rhythm in the keyboard they had at the studio and Wesley would rock some new lyrics on it for every song. Brilliant. No producer fees. You know exactly what you’re getting and you know what will be changed. By staying within the same framework for every song, you as a listener either fall in love with the tune or hate it, but by the fourth song…it’s in your head…
(it’s what the #BASEDRUSTY refers to as ‘Audio Hashtagging’)
Andy Warhol would often silk-screen the same image over and over again, painting it different colors, maybe screening it slightly differently, but it was the same image…over and over again. Who woulda thought that a painting of a Campbell’s soup can would be hanging on the wall of a fine-art gallery? Now who woulda thought that the artist would paint this same image hundreds of times…? And who woulda thought that same artist would come up with another way to do this with images MUCH quicker and easier, to a point where he was actually hiring OTHER people to make the ‘paintings’ and he began simply overseeing the process and signing the work…?
(Kinda sounds like ‘ghostwriting’ and ‘ghost production’ huh?)
the #BASEDRUSTY has taken that idea and applied it to music. There’s parallels all throughout popular music that are like this. As soon as someone comes out with a style and it becomes popular, there will be pale imitations and people that cash in on a trend you created.
the #BASEDRUSTY HIMSELF is on the heels of what Lil B created, but he acknowledges that debt in his very name…and he is true to one or more elements of #BASEDMUSIC in every one of the 25 #LikeCaillou’s that have been posted so far.
(And yo…if Lex Luger can keep selling people the same kinda beats and everyone in Young Money can sound exactly alike, why can’t the #BASEDRUSTY rock this beat as many ways as he can think of? Repetition is the heart of popular music. the #BASEDRUSTY is getting in where he fits in. This is hip-hop and it’s a nation of pirates. It always has been, it’s just blatant now.)
the #BASEDRUSTY knows that social-media is the best, most effective means of promotion. In fact, if there was no social-media, there’d be no #BASEDRUSTY. Everything about him is based on social-media INTERACTION and leaving his mark online.
His name is a #HASHTAG, people. He speaks non-stop #HASHTAG and he repeats certain phrases and words a lot because this is how trends start and are sustained. One person says something fly, more people think it’s fly and repeat it. The originator keeps repeating it and it catches on. There’s many people on Twitter that are excellent ‘hashtaggers’ and recognize that while they’re great as a punchline, they’re also very useful. Hashtags become ‘catch phrases’…’catch phrases’ become t-shirts and bumper-stickers. the #BASEDRUSTY is keenly aware of this and makes sure that the things he wants you to attach him to get mentioned and tagged often; #LikeCaillou, #230COLORS, #SWAG, #ATFU, and of course, his name, because if you really wanna know about him, there’s always a way to find him.
Andy Kaufman is another influential person in the story of the #BASEDRUSTY. Andy was a GENIUS at the ‘put on’…or not. While Andy was doing his thing, there would often be a point in the performance where the audience was either involved in the act or had no idea as to when the ‘act’ was starting and ‘real life’ was ending and vice versa. To this day, there’s pranks he pulled off that people still can’t figure out. He was an absolute genius at blurring the line between ‘persona’ and ‘personality’.
the #BASEDRUSTY is obviously a ‘persona’, but he has plenty of his own personality. It’s kinda important for me to make sure that people understand that it’s a ‘character’ but he has ‘character’. He has his own way of talking, his own stances, his own way of reacting. He is an artist and wants to be respected for what he does, but he’s also trying to make statements, some of which may irk you simply because of the language he uses.
(That in and of itself is a statement…and as the #BASEDRUSTY has pointed out, “IF YOU DON’T LIKE MY EGO, TYPING IN ALL CAPS, AND CALLING YOU ‘BITCHES’ ON EVERY SONG, STOP PRAISING KANYE. I LEARNED IT FROM THE BEST.” He always finds a way to make a point…even while he’s sitting there with his mouth open, staring into the distance. You’ll learn that if you get past the look…)
This next part is key and will definitely help you make sense of some of what the #BASEDRUSTY is trying to do…
In the mind of the #BASEDRUSTY, he is crafting the perfect hip-hop album. He’s got a buncha cold #BARS, ‘guest appearances’ with everyone from Young Money to ODB and DAS EFX, a ‘rock song’, a weed song, a strip club song, some R&B, some ‘soul’, and he’s even got a ‘screwed’ version
