f you have seen the Google doodle today, you have likely been amazed by the ability they gave you to play a dang near real Moog with your keyboard. 

This is awesome to me because it reveals that with technology and a bit of creativity, anyone can make funky noise. This is an amazing time to be an ARTIST…and ANYONE can be one. You have access to infinite sounds and images and you can create and recreate with them at will.

I actually produced all of the tracks that you have heard on ‘The Tinkerer’ and will hear on ‘LOWER’ on this very laptop. In fact, many of the synthesizer and keyboard parts were played on the keyboard I am typing on right now. I discovered a lotta stuff on accident or through sheer will of wanting to figure it out and once I discovered those things, I kept adding on. 

A very big part of what I am about is “Do as much as you can by yourself as affordably as possible. Get it done.” Everyone in @ATFU_ does their own recording, the majority of us produce the music we rap on and record it ourselves. There are seven self-starters in this crew and when one does something, they automatically know six cats are gonna check it out and make sure to get the word out about it. 

My man, @defame1982, a.k.a. ‘The Gorillaphant’) is very much like us. We connect on a lotta levels. He crafted this remix of a song from ‘The Tinkerer’ with the AniMoog app on his iPhone…and it’s FONKAY. Mastered at home himself, got it knocking and here it is for you to hear and download. 

I don’t know how to play instruments. I’ve never gone to music school. I’ve never taken a class on production, recording, or engineering. I’ve no training whatsoever in these regards, but I have trained myself to pursue my passion and utilize whatever there is around me to make the best art I can make. 

I’m proud and happy to have so many people around me that feel the same way and have the same passion. Naptown is FULL of these people.

If you got something in your heart and a creative outlet for it, just do that stuff, man. You can get it done. 

Sometimes you gotta do thangs for yourself if you wanna know if you really wanna do something. I have never stopped making music…and I do everything I had to to make it so I would never stop because it makes my soul complete. As long as I have something to say, I will make music and say it.

…and they’re making it easy to do so. I love it. 

Get in the lab, whatever lab it is…go investigate your passion and get at it.

I been trying to figure out how to get the monster onstage with me. I was lucky enough to have my homeboy, TXTBOOK (DYOG), bring his gear and DJ, so my mixer was sitting off to the side looking all lonely, feeling ignored. Poor lil mixer… 

I hollered at Doug the sound man, who happens to be awesome, was in the first group I was ever in with me, and is a KILLER sound engineer, about a ‘Monster Mic’. He didn’t have the effects unit he needed to pull it off. Being the #punkrockthisshit guy that I am, I came up with the idea of running a microphone thru my mixer. I would use the effects unit on my mixer to get the monster rocking. We sound checked it and got it right. I think it came off pretty cool and this is only the second time I’ve played this song, so I wanted to get it on tape. 

I’m the toolbag holding the camera/iPhone and that other voice off-frame is my main man, Mr. Kinetik, who rocked as my DJ for the night. That’s love. That’s multitasking. That’s holding it down for your gee. My brutha…I love that cat, man. That’s how #ATFU does it, man. 

Big shouts to @SleeperCellCrew, @GreyGranite, & @Eratic for rocking with me tonight and their support in general. Thanks to everyone that was at the release party tonight. I had a GREAT time. Quick story…

I’ve been ‘done’ with ‘The Tinkerer’ for about a month. It is still all I listen to. At this point, I’m burning everything about it into my cerebellum. EVERYTHING. 

There was something about the album that still felt ‘off’ to me. I try a lotta different vibes, production-wise, on this record. It wasn’t a conscious thing; I’m making a hip-hop album, but I listen to everything. EVERYTHING…

Up until yesterday, there was a song called ‘Trouble Walkin’ that ended the narrative of ‘The Tinkerer’, but it didn’t do its job as far as I was concerned. The more I listened the more I realized it was the one song that was throwing me off…and it was the last one in the ‘story’.

I HAD to fix it. I had listened to this album for the last month, thinking it was finished but not ‘finished’. I finally got it together this week to do something about it. 

I put the first elements of the track together on the turntables. Found the pieces I wanted to use, locked them in, man. LOCKED. Applied some audio #SCIENCE and SOUL. In the middle of doing that, the title came to me…

“Speak Monster Speak”

…then the hook…

I burned the CD of the first elements and got to work on the verse. It took a few go’s at it, as you can see from the above picture. If I get four bars in or so and get stuck, I start over. They usually come to me in full 16’s, 24’s, 32’s, 48’s, and yes…96’s. (I’ve done that…check out Mudkids ‘100 Bars’ at the end of ‘Basementality’…that was a lotta fun.)

The second verse came riiiiight after the first. That was the stuff right there, boyeeeee…(y’all gonna trip on that). Naturally, the third verse had to wrap everything you just heard up with a flourish even. I’ve been listening to ‘Speak Monster Speak’ all day for the last two days and finalized the mix yesterday when I got off work at WTLC.

…and NOW, the day I signed the deal to put it out, my album is complete. I’m completely happy with it The timing of things trips me OUT. I worked on ‘The Tinkerer’ non-stop from August 9th to well, shit…TODAY. I’m totally happy with how it sounds and how it’s coming out. 

We’re about to add on, for real, man. You’ll hear The Tinkerer and The Monster on January 31, 2012. There’s some clips on my Youtube right now for you to check out.
