Slim Gon Tell It; Gotta eat.
Yuh man, Naptown Slim here with a real word about real life. Dropped a jewel on the cold streets…
#NaptownSlim got the key(s)…
Man, life be happening, dawg. Just how I feel and what I’m thinking about…thangs be happening that remind me of bigger thangs. Sometimes, I gotta speak on it cuz I treasure what’s real. Thus, Slim gon tell it…
Somehow, my keys came up missing at work today. I know damn well where I put them and damn well where I expected them to be when my shift was over. They weren’t there.
I ran through all the scenarios, retraced my steps, went through all my stuff…nothing. It makes no logical sense because I was in the studio the whole time…there weren’t even that many steps to retrace. All I can figure out is someone picked them up without noticing they were mine.
I did everything I could, including call and text the person I think may have accidentally grabbed them, who was in the middle of doing something else, so they weren’t able to answer. I wasn’t about to leave my truck at work and ride the bus home. I needed an immediate solution and I needed help making it happen.
The only solution was to call Muhbabay and see if she could run the spare keys to me. She’s at work. I hate to have to do this, I like to be able to handle my thangs myself, but I was literally handcuffed AND stranded. I exhausted all my options and couldn’t even verify if there was gonna be a chance of me getting my keys back. For all I knew at this point, they just disappeared…
I called her…
She didn’t complain, she didn’t fuss…she made it happen as soon as she could. I would do the same for her. Any time, any place, whatever she needed…
You ain’t gotta say ‘I love you’ all the time to know it’s real.
When someone loves you, they’ll do whatever they can to help you when you need it. If they can’t, there better be a damn good reason. If they don’t want to, they don’t love you.
Slim gon tell it. Another funky Naptown Slim production, cold-blooded from a really warm heart. #ATFU
(Post-script…just got off the phone with the person I thought accidentally picked up my keys and it turns out, YUP…THEY GOTS EM. It wasn’t the gremlins or the #LOOMANOTTY, just an honest mistake…
*clips spare keys to belt*
Y’all be cool…)

See ya here next week, same fonk time, same fonk channel.
Behold…one of the best investments I’ve ever made in my life. An investment in myself. Still holding. Still rolling.
Christmas ‘05, I bought this for myself. This was the first laptop I’d ever owned. I knew I was gonna need a laptop to continue doing what I do, one way or the other. When I bought it, I didn’t even know how to get on the Internet. Complete n00b. I’d been carrying crates of records around for years; DJing with this thing after that was like flying a space shuttle after you just learned to drive a car.
I got it right before I went on a tour of the Pacific Northwest with Mudkids. I was so nervous about the handling of it, man. I was really new to the world of computers and such. It was on this tour that I was taught what ‘Myspace’ was. The Hellow Snow tour was where I learned about how social media worked. I built the Mudkids MySpace page and got some immediate responses, which was eye-opening. In fact, the person who sent the very first email to the Mudkids is still a very very dear friend to me. I can quote the email in entirety right now. “So much love from me to you. - Jani”. I talk to Jani online regularly to this day.
Well, here we are all these years later and I’ve watched so many advances in technology, yet and still, this old boy is still cranking. I paid for it because I needed it. I thought I was getting a laptop simply so I could DJ; I ended up expanding my reach and base, found a completely forum to express myself in new ways.
I have other laptops now, been thru a few of em, but my main laptop has never let me down. Not once. I think it’s partially cuz I take care of my stuff and partially because someone wants me to remember the investment I made in myself by buying it during Christmas. Yeah, everyone else got their little gifts, but Russ invested in himself in ‘05 and it had paid for itself by March the next year. Now, this little MacBook will be where all the music on the radio show I’m about to do at 9 is coming from, 8 years later, full of soul, still fonkay. Movin a little slower, but never let’s me down. Yup. All the music produced on the two albums I released in the last year started on this laptop. This ‘old’ laptop.
Sometimes, you gotta invest in yourself. Others may invest in you as long as they think they’ll see immediate returns, but the investments you make in yourself will pay off if you stay focused.
I’m glad I paid for this and didn’t ask anyone to get it for me. I took a leap of faith at a crossroads in my life, believed in myself when I wasn’t being given too many reasons to do so and boom…here I am with a social-media audience of 10,000+, getting ready to rock the airwaves on the station I grew up groovin to.
Yep. Best investment ever…other than the time it took me to get here, of course.
Still rising.
Click the pic and you’ll get to hear me using this old thang on the radio. #CLUB1067 is a go every Friday night at 9…
Peace and Blessings,

#NaptownSlim on ‘Failure’
Waddup tho…?
Your buddy, Slim is at the station, ready to run the morning show in less than 4 hours. We gotta maaaaaajor blizzard headed here, but radio don’t stop, so I had to get to the station before the snow hits town.
Sleeping on the floor, well…attempting to sleep on the floor here is proving fruitless, but a word came to me just now…so I guess I may as well tell it.
Slim gon tell it…
The funniest thing anyone ever called me was a “failure”. Now, look…you can say a lotta things about me; you could even go so far as to say I have failed at a few things…
…but when I consider the life I have, the people around me, the trust they have in me to get something done, and all I get done for my damn self…? Naw, I ain’t no failure. Not even close…
When I consider the person that called me that has like NO friends, no job, no goals to speak of, and NO true passion in life, you know…things that indicate a person is actually a real person and has a soul…that’s when it got really funny to me. Now, let’s talk about “failure”, for real.
Sure, it hurt at first…and this is the only person that ever called me anything like that (to my face…we all got haters. Some keep em closer than others) but I had to take into account where this was coming from, why it was being said and what the motivation behind it was…it simply became riotous.
I can point to a buncha things I have done and accomplished that have satisfied my soul, entertained and enlightened others, and put money in my pocket, all without selling out one iota of who I am. That’s ‘success’, but it would be hard to know anything about it if all you see ‘success’ as is ‘money’ and you have nothing of your own within your soul that drives you. That’s actually about the saddest way to live that I can think of; a floundering soul, driven by material possessions, without a passion or goal in the world other than ‘having things’.
People are really quick to point fingers before they look in the mirror. I can tell you PLENTY about “failure”, but I can tell you even more about ‘perseverance’
…and I just did. I don’t quit. I don’t give up. Giving up indicates a WANT to FAIL. I ain’t never wanted to fail at NOTHING in my life…and everything I’ve been involved in has gotten way more than the ‘old college try’.
Keep all that in mind the next time you choose to put my name in your mouth for any reason whatsoever. The next ‘joke’ you tell me like “You’re a failure” comes with an immediate response, without gloves.
Slim gon tell it…all, fearlessly and without regrets. So, if you got something you just HAFTA let me know about myself, make sure you consider what I know about you, whoever you are.
‘Success’
Another funky Naptown Slim production, cold-blooded, cuz the world is too damn real right now.

#MeetBlackSanta!
Hey, man…tomorrow from 1-3 at the REVOL store, 8241 Pendleton Pike, my man BLACK SANTA is gonna be in the house! Myself and the peeps from 106.7 WTLC will be there too! WOO!
Lemme tell ya a cool story, well…I think it is..
I met Black Santa for the first time when I was about 4 or 5. Channel 13 did a story on Black Santa and was filming footage while I was there, man. So, they got some footage of me on the cat’s knee.
My Mama told me those were the news people or whatever. She let me stay up late that night. My whole family gathered around the TV at 11 o’clock to watch the Channel 13 news, especially for the ‘Black Santa’ story.
We watched. Seemed like they sure talked for a loooong time. Yo, I MET Black Santa, man….I WAS THERE…y’all got the pictures or what? I seen a BUNCHA kids already, man…y’all ain’t gonna show me?
Then, at the end of the story…a shot of yuh boy, Young Naptown Slim, chillin, posted on Black Santa’s knee…like a BOSS. My whole family cheered and my Mama hugged me…”My baby was on TV!”
That was the first time I was ever on television. Never forgot it. And here I am, all these years later, on television and the radio, bringing the fonk and love to my home every day…and my family still cheers.
Black Santa is real.
