You guys thank @pennywas and @josheedwallace for their enthusiasm, which I have found infectious.
Today, I sent them a tweet containing a picture of all the mixes in my hard-drive and I have appointed them the keepers of the flame. Yup, when they hit me up for a mix, yuh know like when it’s been a while since I made one, I’m sending them to my archive and telling them to pick one based simply on the title alone.
Let’s have some fun with this shit! BLIND DRAW!! Hope ya dig em!
Every now and then, I will post one of the blind draws that my sisters of the funk select; this is one such case, a Jay-Z mix I made three years ago; you can’t really go wrong with Jay’s catalog, thought it’d be fun to share this one with y’all.
Hit the pic to download ‘American Lyricist’ and watch for more illness from this page…

Yeah, man…more old-school. I can do this all day…
This mix is representative of the stuff I woulda been tryna bump in your jambox. Now, sometimes it worked out for me, but sometimes folks here in Indiana would look at me crazy when I put my tape in the deck. As time has passed, people have started to miss this kinda stuff; call it ‘backpacker’, ‘college’, ‘underground’ whatever, I think it can ALL get in the mix…which is why I have no problem mixing Wu-Tang Clan with Snoop Dogg.
It’s ALL hip-hop…and here’s some more from the vault. If you bumped tapes your homeboy sent you of the local college-radio hip-hop show in the 90’s, you’re gonna love this. If you couldn’t be there, consider this half-hour a lil primer of that ill shit we stayed bumpin….
Enjoy. Have a great Friday. Hit those initials at the end and follow me on Twitter.

So yeah…these are the mixes I have in the ‘vault’.
I’ll be posting some of these as I feel like it and I never stop mixing… EVER.
I love what I do, man…and I’m happy to share some of it with you. There’s a whole world of music out there. I feel that if you have a computer program and are DJing (which is what 95% of us are doing) then there’s no excuse for not trying all kinds of stuff. No excuse for not ripping your favorite CD’s and finally getting to mix the songs you’ve always wanted to (especially if you are like me and came from a legacy of buying vinyl every week)
#butanywaydoe, as I feel the urge or as my timeline on Twitter inspires me (I have some great conversations, shoutout to everybody rocking with me on Twitter), I’ll post some stuff here for you to check out, share, or whatever…
Aight, just trippin off how deep the archives run…and that last picture is LAZARUS!!

I can’t say enough good stuff about this man. I really can’t…
I grew up on this stuff and there can be no arguing the fact that Stevie Wonder is pretty much as good as it gets, on so many levels. Stevie has made me aware of the power of music as much as any artist. He’s made me aware of the power of spirit probably more than any artist.
For me, trying to pick my favorite Stevie Wonder song is damn-near impossible. I can’t even be completely real and say I have a favorite album. They’re all so necessary for me and often the story behind the songs is as amazing as the man who wrote them. To the author of this post, who is also the kid who made this mix (*buffs nails on chest*), this music is the pulse of life. It’s been a part of my life as long as I can remember and I’m only too happy to share it with you.
I tried to touch on some album tracks that just groove, man. As I stated there’s not much bad you can do when you are playing Stevie. He’s a gift. Yeah, I said it…’a gift’ from God for all of us to appreciate, admire, and enjoy….
So, yeah, I flippin love Stevie Wonder and here’s a half-hour of so of why. You’re welcome to it, but you’d do yourself a favor to just go dive into his discography, head first.

#NoBorders (Free Download)
Aight, here’s one that I made in the spirit of the highway and an open mind.
I like to rawk in the truck, man. And I like to rawk on the wheels of steel, yo. I don’t believe there’s any music that can’t be formatted into a dope mix of some kind. I dream of the opportunity to pull some of the shit you never expect outta my bag o’ tricks. I look forward to blending in the stuff that you swore you’d never hear blended.
It’s truly the joy of DJing for me. It was like that when I had to carry crates of records and now that we’re talkin’ hard-drives…?
There are #NOBorders…

Man….
It’s been raining all day here in #Naptown, but I’m not tryna complain…I’m just kinda ready for the sunshine. Best I could do was put this set together…
You’ll hear some tunes that just make the sun shine (in my crib, at least…) Maybe you’ll get some kinda motivation and groove outta this one. Got some breaks in there that you’ve heard sampled by your favorite rappers, but let’s go beyond the breaks, shall we? There’s some great music out there…and I intend to jam to it…
…and you’re all invited. Hit the pic to download this one.

#MarvinGaye #OtherVoices (Free Download)
I’m a massive fan and disciple of Marvin Gaye. This mix contains some different takes and mixes of some songs with which you may familiar, blended by myself of course.
I wanted to touch on some of Marvin’s lesser-known works. I’ve always thought ‘Here, My Dear’ was an incredible album; I first found out on a cassette years ago, while it was still outta print. I felt like I had found something remarkable and special, a sort of ‘Holy Grail’ for the neophyte Marvin collector that I was at the time. I couldn’t have been more pleased with the discovery. ‘Here, My Dear’ still ranks as one of the best albums I have ever heard, served as an inspiration for some parts of my own solo LP, ‘Lazarus’.
When the Deluxe Editon of ‘Here, My Dear’ came out, I was blown away by the alternate mixes on the second disc; a lotta the songs were far more stripped-down than the original mixes…and what REALLY tripped me out was the mixes on the second disc were done by contemporary producers like Salaam Remi and ?uestlove (of The Roots).
Actually, when I think about it, it makes perfect sense to strip down these tracks to really let the grooves and Marvin’s vocals shine…and that would be a natural inclination for some of the more contemporary producers raised on hip-hop. The beauty was that they weren’t allowed to use anything but the master tapes…no adding of any instrumentation or current computer trickery…just take what Marvin had on the tapes and work with it. It’s phenomenal. I honestly suggest you hear the whole thing, both the original album and the remarkable alternate takes (some of which are included here)
Also, had to touch on the ‘Trouble Man’ soundtrack, my personal favorite ‘Blaxploitation’ soundtrack. The title track is worth the price of the album alone, but there’s some incredible arrangements and grooves on this LP. Cool synthesizer sounds, BIG horns, nasty grooves that make you feel like you are the baddest trouble man (or trouble woman) on the planet. ‘T’ Plays It Cool’ was one of the first songs I wrote a rap to, meaning I actually formatted the rhyme to go with the song. So, Marvin is kinda responsible for me being a rapper and songwriter.
Add in an alternate take of a single-only release and a beeeeeeeeeeee-yooooooooo-teeeeeeeeeeee-ful song from a little known compilation and you gotta nice little half-hour of some different sides of one of the greatest voices of this or any other time…
Hope ya like it. Hit the pic to download it.
