Live last night at The Mousetrap Bar-Grill, my dudes @TheTwinCats jammed one of the cuts from my next album with me…and it came OFF.
This was the first time we played this tune together. Sho nuff FONKAY. Check this out…see how Naptown gets down.
BANG!
#ATFU AND THE TWIN CATS TOO
LIVE! SATURDAY NIGHT, JUNE 16! with @TheTwinCats!
I fell back from playing shows until I knew they would be worth the time and effort…and honestly, for a while, I had to go and get my other ducks in a row.
I basically fell back from playing shows here because I had a lotta bad experiences over the last few years, wanted to learn how to do other things, and wanted to play DIFFERENT kindsa shows…like this one. I come from a rock background and host a rock show on TV where I live. I come from a soul background and work on the contemporary R&B station where I live.
I didn’t wanna be on the bill of yet another ‘hip hop’ show when I started to feel like I wasn’t JUST making ‘hip hop’ music AND I felt like hip-hop artists in this city were totally being taken lightly AND for granted.
My answer was to focus on extending the reach of #ATFU elsewhere, learn how to produce music myself, and establishing myself to the world as ‘Rusty Redenbacher, from Naptown…not stuck there. You better start checking for him and his people.’
…but the right show with the right bands and MC’s…? I’ll be there if they need me and I can do it.
all that said, “I AM A HIP HOP ARTIST” in the truest sense of ALL those words..and I always will be. I can’t deny what I am…but what I am, like hip hop, has roots in a little of EVERYTHING.
I want that recognized cuz it’s coming out in the music.
I’m excited dennamug for this one…
#ATFU
See ya Saturday.
#ATFU. WORK.
This is the set-list from the show @MrKinetik and I played in LaPorte this weekend. As you can see, we had too much music to pick from…and we’re not counting the encore songs that we could throw into the mix.
We actually had to cut even more songs from this set as the show was running behind schedule. The time of the set you’re looking at here is about an hour, all solid material. I told Mr. Kinetik after the show, “Man, think of all the great songs we DIDN’T play!”
He said, “We have too much music that works…that’s a good problem to have.”
Yeah, man!
CLICK THE PIC TO SEE A BIT OF HOW WE GOT THERE AND WHAT WE PLAYED.
#ATFU on the road.
Check out The ‘Kid and @MrKinetik rocking ‘POONAROO ‘12’ in LaPorte, IN.
We be rocking. See ya onstage somewhere soon. It’s time.
#ATFU
Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, live tonight at The Vogue in Indianapolis, IN.
Yup. The Upsetter killed The Devil in #NAPTOWN.
So awesome, man.
I never thought I would ever get to see this man play live.
He’s been a huge influence on me since I first discovered his work through The Beastie Boys’ old magazine ‘Grand Royal’.
I found a tape (!!!) called ‘All The Hits’ for a dollar (!!!) after I read the article. That mug STAYED in the deck. My friends would come over and wonder why I was listening to this hissy, odd sounding tape EVERY TIME they came over. I don’t even think I could explain it at the time. It just touched me.
I’ve been throwing references to his work in mine ever since, going as far back as the first Mudkids album and most recently with ‘The Tinkerer’s Dub (Mpozitivity)’ on my latest release, Rusty Redenbacher - ‘The Tinkerer’
In later years, I came to realize how massive his influence was on reggae music. He recorded and produced some incredible sides for Bob Marley And The Wailers, when they were making the move from ‘ska’ into what is now recognized worldwide as ‘reggae’ music.
He invented ‘Dub’ reggae. He’s one of the first people to truly use the studio as an instrument. He was doing things with a four track in 1970 that people can’t figure out or replicate today. Just amazing.
Well, I saw Scratch kill the devil last night with Muhbabay in my hometown. It was one of the best nights out I’ve had in a long time, thought I should share some of it with you.
SCRATCH THE DUB ORGANIZER! HEAR ME NOW! BIG UP @djIndianaJones! BIG UP CRUSHSTAR INTERNATIONAL! BIG UP YUH SELF!

#ATFU - we work on Sundays…that’s GOD’s day off.
We kilt it.
#ATFU, that’s what we holl’in’ ‘bout…
Wednesday, June 22nd, we’re going back to the spot where a lotta this started for some of us, The Melody Inn, affectionately known as ‘The Mel’
Expect greatness. The Mel has long been a bastion of good times and is actually the spot where alpha.live and Rusty first began to talk (and spar). Weekly battles used to be held there and many ill rhymes were spit. Great times were had and the foundation for more than a few of #Naptown’s best spitters was laid at this little bar that was giving hip-hop a forum in #Naptown when other folks were acting scared.
We’re bring as much of the Alley as we can, baby. We’re rocking with Brad Real and Wiz Kids and looking to really get busy; our man alpha.live should be rolling in hot with the ‘Soul Cinema’ goods, Mr. Kinetik will probably play material from ‘Sounds Of Soul’ and definitely will be joined by Rusty Redenbacher to do tracks from ‘The Professor And The Hustler’ . Expect to see F.I.R.E. (Feeray) and Son Of Thought bring their unique brand of chaotic wisdom to the stage…
…and the brothers from outta town, E Dot Spencer and A. Skywalker are checking their schedules.
Yep…for a Wednesday. This is how we get down.
Save the date; June 22, 2011 at The Melody Inn in beautiful #NAPTOWN.
#StevieWonderLive1973 #FreeDownload
Big up @Dart_Adams , dude always talks about such great music on Twitter and is mad knowledgeable on many a tune and artist.
Dart was talking about this wild Stevie Wonder album that ain’t a Stevie Wonder album. The title is ‘Eivets Rednow’…I stumbled across it years ago in the most magical place in the world, Rockin’ Billy’s.
This record sat and stared at me for months. I stared right back at it… and then one day, I had the idea to read the name of the artist backwards. I actually think I listened to it because the cover just looked cool and I did flip it over to see ‘Alfie’ in the track listings. (I had just gotten the Sonny Rollins’ album of the same name), so that intrigued me. Once I heard the harmonica, I knew I had stumbled upon a Stevie album that I didn’t know the first thing about…and that was cool AF for someone that had the majority of his studio work at the time.
…which leads to this post. I asked Dart if I had sent him this soundboard recording of Stevie I have from ‘73. He just tweeted back ‘I need that’.
Word. I got you…
This is a bootleg recording that I found in a record-store a whlie ago, back when dope little indie record-stores would search these kindsa things out for the folks that realy did give a damn to buy them. I used to LOVE bootlegs. I collected bootleg cassettes like it was NOTHIN, man. Once the game moved over to CD’s, I was upgrading all my regular stuff, so the bootlegs went to the wayside. I still have a lotta dope boots on CD from the artists I felt were worth getting more into…(my Radiohead bootleg game is bananas, yo)
This is a jewel though and while I was making the link for the homey, I thought I’d lace my friends over here up, too. The tracks are broken up kinda weird, but it’s a full live show from ‘73. I mean, this is SO GOOD…
Here’s the playlist, y’all…
1) Intro Jam/Contusion
2) Higher Ground
3) SuperWoman
4) To Know You Is To Love You/Signed, Sealed, Delivered
5) Visions
6) Perfect Angel/You Are The Sunshine Of My LIfe/Superstition/Someone Loves You
Click the pic to download it. Hope you enjoy it.
Thank you, Stevie.
