When I was crafting ‘The Tinkerer’, I was kinda in a ‘fortress of solitude’ for the week. I would get up, connect with the world for a bit, handling business…and get my butt into the Iron Man Monster Factory to build more men and machines.
My homeboy, Bewsey, hit me up cuz he was in town for a minute and I had to see him, man. This is a cat I spent many a day at Rockin’ Billy’s talking about music, learning the BUSINESS of it, learning how to price music, run a store, and be a ‘boss’. I wanted to work at Rockin’ Billy’s because I LOVED the store as a kid. I got to work there because I NEEDED to see how a RECORD-STORE runs. I didn’t know that at the time, I thought I was just getting a job.
Things I learned and friends I made at Rockin’ Billy’s will be with me till the day I die. You see that beautiful girl in the backseat? I remember chasing her around the store when she was juuuuust starting to run. And she would draw me pictures (that her scoundrel Dad would use to make me the butt of jokes) I would tape up in the store like museum exhibits. And whenever I had to go to the office to talk to her Pops about work, we’d look at that picture of her in that red coat sitting in the rocking chair and crack up about her ‘ballheddud ass’. LMAO!!! And now she’s a young woman, man. Wow.
Anyway, I was in such a zone creating this album and no one had heard what I was doing yet, but one of the first people that woulda heard it was Bewsey. I woulda ran into the store and waited for my turn on the CD player and popped ‘The Tinkerer, 8/13/02. 12’ and talked to him about what I was doing and shared my enthusiasm.
…and that’s just what I did this day. We met at the coffee spot (man, I ain’t even know Olivia was coming! BONUS!!) but they serve alcohol so my gee, Olivia couldn’t come in. SMH. Most unswag. WHATEVER!!! I ran in and copped my coffee and took em to the hovercraft to hear ‘The Tinkerer’ and we talked and got caught up on all types of stuff for one of the best half-hours I’ve had in a minute. I took the CD out and gave it to Mark, with all my personal scrawl on it to mark the date and time and all that.
As special as this album feels to me, it’s the people that helped me get to this point that are REALLY special.
RAWKAWN, Monday is STILL ‘Rock Day’. Never forget…
