Man, I love this cat. Just an absolute original and totally necessary. ‘Scratch’ is the man.
I got hip to Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry through The Beasties. Yeah. They had him on the cover of one of their issues of ‘Grand Royal’ and the article was so illuminating and interesting, I had to research the man.
I was lucky enough to stumble upon a cassette called ‘All The Hits’. I had never heard anything genuinely attributed to Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry (well, aside from the Marley stuff and at this point I wasn’t aware of his involvement and impact on Bob.) I totally fell in love with this tape. Everything about it was dope; the way the songs were recorded, the songs themselves, the way ‘Scratch’ would enunciate certain things (“turrrrtle DOVE”); I just LOVED IT.
That one little article and one little cassette led to me discovering a true giant of reggae. I lost the magazine (bummer, the ‘Grand Royal’ magazines were always fun and worth keeping) and the tape (you know tapes used to come up missin). Years, later, when I started working at Rockin’ Billy’s, one of the first things I did when I learned to use the catalogue (no computers there, g) was look up ‘All The Hits’. I was astounded by the depth of ‘Scratch’s work; there’s so many compliations and albums and remix albums…the dude is PRO-LIF-IC.
I cross referenced it with the ‘OTHER book’ (the one with all the records that charted and artist’s discography) to no avail. But, I had a feelin…I had a feelin that the one I was looking at in the catalog was the one I needed. I ordered ‘All The Hits’ and The Upsetters’ ‘Super Ape’, which I had heard so many great things about (all turned out to be true) and here I am telling y’all about my man, ‘The Mighty Upsetter’.
‘Scratch’ is the man, a true production genius, an enigma, a legend…you can hit the pic and download some of my favorite Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry tunes. Hope you dig it.
