#NaptownSlim gon tell it; ‘IDENTITY’
…and again, the blessings flow. Let the words that come outta my mouth ring as true as ever. Naptown Slim gotta say something to you.
Who ARE you?
Dig this; I have gone by many names; Old friends call me ‘Rock J’. People who know me from when Mudkids were first starting still call me ‘Choc’. ‘Choc Soreel’ was forcefully retired/put to sleep and I became ‘Rusty Redenbacher’, going so far as to inform any and all press that was interested to never use any of my former names again, including my real one.
…but I never lost ‘Russell’. I almost did, but I never lost ‘Russell’ because I had a strong family and circle to lift ‘Russell’ up when life was kicking his ass. I became ‘Lazarus’, then ‘The Professor’ and/or ‘The Hustler’ (you pick), then I made myself invisible (cuz I felt like some fools just wanted me to go AWAY) and became ‘The Tinkerer’. Now, I holla at you as ‘Naptown Slim’…
I gave myself these names and created these personas because I am an artist. If you holler at me in ‘real life’, you’ll be approaching ‘Russell’.
…and all these personas and characters are part of ‘Russell’. I never lose sight of that. I know who I am.
Some people are so damn confused about their identity and what makes them who they are, they don’t even know what name to use for themselves. If your name is all you can come up with to establish your ‘identity’, you have no ‘identity’.
You’re a space-filler, a statistic, a number. You’re nobody. An entity, nothing more, nothing less. You just ‘exist’.
If you hafta change your identity according to the group of people you’re around, guess what? Once again, you have no ‘identity’ AND you’re weak-willed. Keep this in mind too; the people that knew the ‘other you’ never forget where you came from and who you really purported to be…and they see you a measure of disdain that you assuredly feel, even when they don’t say it outright.
My name is Naptown Slim and this is my truth.
My name is Russell and the truth set me free.
Now who ARE you?
Know thy self, fool.
That’s another funky Naptown Slim production, from the heart and soul of a real-ass dude. I know me.
